Week of April 11th

This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

John 15:12-14, 16

Principal’s Corner

Jesus told his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). I don’t know about you, but in our human nature suffering can be quite hard to swallow, especially when we learn of a sick child, natural disaster, or the darkness of war. Bad things are allowed to happen. Yet as Christians we are called to modal Christ and therefore remind ourselves and our kids that that the trials of our suffering can be in prayer, united to the sufferings of our Lord Jesus. The writings of the saints, particularly contemporary saints like John Paul II, Teresa of Calcutta, Padre Pio, and Therese of Lisieux illustrate just how important this redemptive suffering is. There is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday.

This Holy Week, which stretches from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, is observed with special solemnity by the faithful as a time of devotion to the Passion (Latin for ‘Suffering’) of Jesus Christ. It marks the last week of His earthly life and includes Holy Thursday where He washed the apostles’ feet and instituted the sacrament of Holy Eucharist, and leads into his Passion on Good Friday where He suffered a most brutal scourging and execution for our sins, was buried, and then rose from the dead in radiant glory on Easter, the highest celebration of the Christian calendar.

The academy will be closed this Good Friday through Easter Monday. I enjoin you to take time this week to honor the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ with your family. As Christians we believe in a risen Lord, but we bear in mind and heart in a special way this week the power of suffering and the ultimate price paid for salvation.

From my family to yours, have a most blessed Easter!

  • Summer Slide

Without ongoing review and practice over the summer break, children forget much of what they learned in school during the previous year. This phenomenon is sometimes called the "summer slide." As a result, teachers spend the first six weeks of school reviewing and re-teaching material that was already taught in the previous year. The summer slide delays the introduction of new material meant to be taught in the fall.

For reading, it is recommended to read 20 Minutes each day. Our school library can check out books over the summer, or you can contact Mrs Mielke for help getting a virtual library started before the summer break. dmielke@jpiicatholicacademy.org

For Math, there is a “Summer solutions” book available. Each Summer Solutions practice book contains 30 lessons, along with Help Pages and an answer key for self-checking. It is recommended that the students complete a lesson three times per week over the summer break.

Here is the link for ordering: Summer Solutions
