Week of February 14th

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

1 John 4:7-9

  • Principal’s Note

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40

It is Valentine's Day and our classrooms at Saint JPII are buzzing with sugar-fueled excitement, but who was St. Valentine?

While the stories of the life of the 3rd-century Roman saint are a bit inconsistent, it is understood that due to his refusal to renounce his faith and stop winning souls for Christ, he was martyred on the 14th of February around the year 280AD. Some accounts point to his efforts to marry Christian couples, an illegal activity in then pagan Rome. Whoever he was, Valentine did exist, with archeologists having unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to St. Valentine. During the middle ages Valentine's Day was most likely popularized to overpower the pagan holiday, Lupercalia. Although the exact origin of the holiday is not widely agreed upon, it is widely recognized as a day for selfless love, devotion, and romance. He is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, beekeepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people. His feast day is celebrated on February 14.

  • Spring Auction

Here we go folks, the Spring Auction committee had their first meeting last week to begin preparations for our biggest annual fundraiser.

There’s lots to be done and we would like to grow our committee! Please consider joining us for the next meeting on March 3rd, 6PM at the academy. This is a wonderful opportunity to get some of those volunteer hours in! We need brainpower to come up with ideas as well as actual day of event volunteers.

We have started to ask donations for :

  1. Small Bucket raffle items

  2. Large Live Auction items

  3. Monetary Signage Ad. donations

If you own or work for or know someone who owns a business who would be interested in supporting our school please ask for the promotional packet to be sent home with your child.

Keep in mind that fundraisers makes up approximately 1/3 of our yearly budget, and it is through fundraisers like this one, that we can try to keep tuition costs low.
