Week of December 5th
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10
Holy Mass this Thursday, Dec 8th
This week the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, December 8th. As this is a holy day of obligation we will have our 8:30 Student mass at Resurrection this Thursday vs. Friday as usual. We invite all families who can to join us!
Q: What is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception?
A: Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Blessed Pope Pius IX proclaimed on December 8, 1854: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin." (Catechism of the Catholic Church) As Our Lady Immaculately Conceived is the patroness of the United States of America, this is a holy day of obligation in the United States. Advent is here!
Last week we began the four week season of Advent and at Friday’s school mass, Fr. Abraham reminded us all that Advent is a time of preparing our hearts to welcome Jesus Christ on Christmas. A tradition in our classrooms and in many homes is the advent wreath. The four candles on the wreath commonly are three purple candles and one rose-colored candle. The first week's candle represents the hope we have in Jesus. The second week's candle represents the peace we find in Jesus. The third week's candle is the love we have in Christ and the fourth candle is the joy we find in Christ.
